PAULA RIGBY
NEW ZEALAND, NGĀI TAHU, NGĀTI KAHUNGUNU KI TE WAIROA, NGĀTI RUAPANI, NGĀI TŪHOE
Rigby is a skilled senior weaver, with years of experience creating beautiful taonga (treasures) from natural fibres native to Aotearoa New Zealand, feathers, and more contemporary fibres. Her works use traditional skills passed from one generation to the next and she often creates pieces that are a commentary on the habitat that these resources are sourced, the need to be aware of our effect on the environment and continued sustainable practice.
Ngā Puna o Waiwhetū are the sacred healing pools located in Ōtautahi that were built over to create the CBD. This work is named after those pools to remind us of the healing power of water, and the need to preserve and conserve water to protect our Ūkaipō.
The works are made with found materials, recycled t-shirt material as a further conversation into being sustainable and responsible citizens to our whenua.
